Renewable Sources for Datacenter Electricity Generation

Sustainability is frequently viewed from an operational point of view while the environmental goals are treated as a cost center in the business, as a risk or compliance to adhere. But for NxtGen, datacenters and sustainable cloud infrastructure are more than just business—they provide an incredible opportunity to give back to the communities where we operate. Since 2014, NxtGen undertook a pledge of transitioning to create foundational elements that will be integral to achieving our long-term goal of 100% clean and renewable energy usage across all facilities by 2025!

Achieving Operational Excellence - 2025 Sustainability goals

For NxtGen, efficiency and green energy are key components of our approach to designing, building, and operating sustainable data centers. We are proud of how efficiently our datacenters operate today and are still on the look for better approaches to enhance that efficiency and extend the lifecycle of our server hardware. This was made possible by procuring the following renewable energies and driving power-saving initiatives to achieve our goal of net-zero carbon emissions by 2025.

1.   Solar Energy for In-house Power Generation

The solar energy installation on the NxtGen Bidadi data center’s wide rooftop consists of 1044 solar panels across an area of approximately 35,000 square feet. The panels will provide 7.39% of the data center’s energy needs. The total energy generated by solar units in the year 2020-21 is 319060 kWh. The panels will also help to reduce carbon levels by 575447 Kg per year over 25 years.

2.   Solar campus lighting

NxtGen relies on a vast amount of solar energy for its datacenter electricity requirements and thus installed solar-powered lights across the campus. The solar-powered campus lightings showcase NxtGen’s commitment to a "green" orientation and deliver an environmentally conscious message throughout the campus. The datacenter campus is illuminated with 41 solar street lighting fixtures with a rating of 13.5W of solar light fittings spread across 2.5 Acres approx. including campus roads and open areas.

A major advantage of Solar-powered lights is that they provide high-quality light for more than five days without a single ray of light due to advancements in battery technology.

3.   Sourcing Green Power from Wind

NxtGen’s Bangalore datacenter runs its operations on a significant amount of wind power and other Green Power Sources. The contribution of these renewable energy sources to the company’s electricity generation was 6500 Units in May, 2,00,000 Units in June, and 1,60,000 units in July 2021.

The green power sources used by NxtGen are playing a key role in minimizing power consumption to run datacenter operations. The low energy requirements coupled with the low-cost electricity produced by the wind turbine itself can pass on substantial cost savings to our customers. As a result, our services are competitively priced and eco-friendly with a near-zero carbon footprint.

4.   LED Lightings across all NxtGen facilities

NxtGen has installed LED lightings across all its facilities as they are critical to lifetime and quality consistency. The Bidadi datacenter utilizes 431 LED Lighting Fixtures of all types with an average rating of 40W across 33144 Sq ft. LED technology has become extremely efficient and has a long product life compared with traditional lighting types such as sodium vapor and fluorescent lighting, therefore significantly decreasing operations and maintenance costs at NxtGen while continuing to deliver a bright, crisp white light that does not fade in intensity

Power Saving Initiatives

  • NxtGen Datacenters are designed to deliver efficiency with variable load & variable ambient temperature.

  • We have migrated 100% of the storage to SSDs which led to 70 times lower power consumption as compared to spinning disks and operate nearly at 40 Petabytes, reducing costs up to ₹13.52 Crores per Annum.

  • NxtGen also leverages low TDP servers with high-efficiency processors, which led our compute power to double with zero increase in power consumption over the past 3 years

  • By utilizing LED lightings across all its facilities which are extremely efficient and have long product life over traditional ones, significantly decreasing operations and maintenance costs at NxtGen

  • NxtGen’s Bangalore facility runs 40+% on renewable energy and has contributed to 86,440 units in in May, 215230 units in June, and 114936 units in July 2021.

  • NxtGen Endeavors to Mitigate Climate Change by Planting Trees

Data centers consume a lot of power not just for computing but also to cool the heat generated from the computing equipment. “We are making a conscious attempt to use power from renewable sources such as solar and wind. While it takes effort and investment to go carbon neutral, it really pays off. On one hand, you are working on a socially responsible action, and on the other hand, it gives NxtGen the edge when clients have to choose a data center service provider. Most of them appreciate the extra effort that we put in,  Rajgopal A S, MD & CEO, NxtGen

NxtGen has always been environmentally conscious & since its inception, it has used eco-friendly materials for building the data centers. In 2016, on behalf of its clients and employees, NxtGen funded the planting of 5,000 saplings across locations in Bangalore, Nilgiris in Tamil Nadu, Barmer in Rajasthan, and Talupula in Andhra Pradesh. NxtGen celebrated a Green Diwali in collaboration with the SankalpTaru Foundation, a non-profit that initiates, develops, and manages reforestation and environmental conservation projects across India with rural livelihood projects. As part of the initiative, SankalpTaru worked closely with beneficiary farmers to nurture the saplings planted by NxtGen via sustainable farming methods. The saplings were geo-tagged and taken care of for the next two years, after which the trees were able to sustain themselves.
